The popularity of heavy rock in the late 1960s led Fender to re-think its strategy of exclusively using single-coil pickups, as they were not perceived as being suitable for the thick sound and extended sustain favored by heavy rock guitarists using double-coil humbucking pickups. Consequently, Fender hired former Gibson employee Seth Lover, the inventor of the humbucker himself, to design a humbucking pickup for use in a number of Fender guitars. The result was a pickup known as the Wide Range humbucker, and it was used in a variety of different Fender models including the Deluxe

The Breadwinner was a solid body electric guitar made by the Ovation Guitar Company. It is one of the few solid body electrics they ever made, and it was the first mass-produced American guitar to have active FET preamp electronics.The Breadwinners were coated in Kaman Industries' "LyraChord" 'BLACK' material over Mahogony and has 2x Humbuckers. Serial number E2703 1973 (Jan)-1975 (Feb) made in New Hartford Connecticut USA The designer Mike Writes"...My idea was to make it resemble a medieval battle axe because musicians at that time often referred to their instruments as their "axe". I also designed it so there was a deep cutaway below the strings to reach the high notes. I also wanted it to rest comfortably on the knee when playing while seated. Hence the cutaway at the bottom..." Noted musicians that used an Ovation Breadwinner are David Cassidy, Glen Campbell, Steve Marriott, Robert Smith (The Cure) Dave Lambert (The Strawbs), Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) & Ace Frehley (Kiss)
